When most people think about getting a pedicure, they imagine warm water, soft towels, beautiful nails, and a chance to relax.

While that's certainly part of the experience, I believe exceptional foot care begins long before you ever sit down in my chair.

It begins with the choices made behind the scenes.

The products I choose.

The time I dedicate to cleaning and preparation.

The sanitation protocols I follow.

The continuing education I pursue.

The commitment I make to protecting not only my clients, but also our beautiful Chesapeake Bay community.

After more than 25 years as a licensed cosmetologist, I've learned that true luxury isn't just about beautiful surroundings—it's about knowing every detail has been thoughtfully prepared with your health, comfort, and peace of mind in mind.

Wellness Begins with Prevention

At Tina Bowen Wellness, I believe wellness and sanitation go hand in hand.

Creating a relaxing experience also means creating an environment where clients can feel confident that every reasonable step has been taken to provide clean, professional care.

Rather than relying on products simply because "that's the way it's always been done," I continually research advancements in professional salon sanitation, infection prevention, foot health, environmentally responsible products, and lower-tox disinfectant technologies.

As new products and research become available, I continue to refine my protocols whenever they provide a safer or more sustainable option without compromising effectiveness.

I believe learning never stops.

Why I Choose EPA-Registered Professional Disinfectants

One of the most common misconceptions is that stronger-smelling chemicals automatically work better, or that products labeled "natural" are automatically effective disinfectants.

Professional sanitation should never rely on assumptions.

Instead, I choose EPA-registered professional disinfectants and use them exactly according to the manufacturer's directions.

My current sanitation protocol includes two complementary technologies:

  • EPA-registered Accelerated Hydrogen Peroxide (AHP®)

  • EPA-registered botanical disinfectants

Each serves a specific purpose within my sanitation process while supporting my commitment to professional, thoughtful care.

One of my primary disinfectants is Prevention™ Ready-to-Use, an EPA-registered Accelerated Hydrogen Peroxide (AHP®) disinfectant (EPA Registration No. 74559-9).

According to the manufacturer's Safety Data Sheet, when used as directed, it is not classified under any OSHA hazard class and contains no ingredients considered hazardous to health at its intended use concentration. Like all professional disinfectants, it is always used according to the EPA-approved label directions.

I also incorporate an EPA-registered botanical disinfectant whenever appropriate. Using two EPA-registered technologies allows me to choose the most appropriate product for each application while supporting my goal of using effective, thoughtfully selected products.

Cleaning Always Comes Before Disinfection

One thing many people don't realize is that cleaning and disinfecting are two different steps.

Before anything is disinfected, every reusable surface is thoroughly cleaned to remove visible debris, oils, lotions, skin cells, and residue.

Only then is the disinfectant applied according to the manufacturer's required contact time.

Proper cleaning is an essential part of effective professional sanitation, and it's one of the reasons I intentionally schedule time between appointments.

Why I Chose a Pipeless Pedicure Bowl

Traditional whirlpool pedicure tubs contain internal plumbing, jets, and water lines that require careful cleaning and maintenance.

Although these systems can be safely maintained when proper procedures are followed, I chose a different approach.

All pedicure services at Tina Bowen Wellness are performed using a reusable black pipeless, non-porous, pedicure bowl.

Because there is no internal plumbing or hidden water lines, every surface is completely visible and accessible, allowing the entire bowl to be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected between every client according to the disinfectant manufacturer's directions.

Fresh water is used for every appointment.

Multiple Layers of Protection

I believe the best sanitation protocols don't rely on a single product or one step.

Instead, they use multiple layers of protection working together.

Every reusable professional implement follows a carefully designed process.

First, each instrument is thoroughly cleaned to remove visible debris.

Next, it is disinfected using EPA-registered professional disinfectants according to the manufacturer's directions.

After disinfection, every tool is completely dried and stored in a professional UV storage cabinet with high heat.

The UV cabinet is not a replacement for proper cleaning or EPA-registered disinfection. Instead, it serves as an additional storage step by helping ensure implements are completely dry before storage while providing another layer of protection for clean instruments.

Single-Use Means Single-Use

Some items simply cannot be reliably disinfected because they are porous.

These items are used for one client only and then discarded.

This includes:

  • Nail files

  • Buffers

  • Orangewood sticks

  • Toe separators

  • Pumice products

  • Other porous disposable items when required by sanitation standards

Fresh Towels Every Time

Every client receives freshly laundered towels.

As my business continues to grow, I also strive to incorporate environmentally preferable textiles, such as organic cotton or bamboo, whenever practical.

Thoughtful Choices Beyond Sanitation

Caring for people also means caring for our environment.

Whenever possible, I choose products that reduce environmental impact without compromising professional standards.

These include:

  • Biodegradable gloves

  • Compostable trash bags

  • Refillable product containers

  • Recyclable packaging

  • Environmentally preferable products whenever suitable

Every small decision adds up.

Healthy Air Matters

Creating a wellness environment isn't only about clean tools.

I also pay attention to indoor air quality by minimizing unnecessary chemical odors, maintaining good ventilation, and thoughtfully selecting products whenever possible.

A healthier environment benefits everyone.

Why I Leave Time Between Every Client

One question I'm often asked is why I don't schedule appointments back-to-back.

The answer is simple.

Proper sanitation takes time.

Cleaning takes time.

Disinfection requires following the manufacturer's required contact times.

Preparing the room for the next client takes time.

By intentionally scheduling time between appointments, I never have to rush the cleaning process—or your experience.

Continuing Education

The beauty and wellness industries are always evolving, and I believe my clients deserve someone who continues learning.

I regularly research advancements in:

  • Professional salon sanitation

  • Foot health

  • Infection prevention

  • Lower-tox disinfectant technologies

  • Sustainable wellness practices

Every course, every article, and every new advancement helps me provide a better experience for my clients.
